Abstract

This study aims to analyse the forms of oppression that occur to the two main characters in Lynn Nottage's play Ruined, Sophie and Salima. This includes the impact that the two main characters receive from the oppression that occurs. This study uses a descriptive method to analyze the oppression depicted in the play "Ruined" by Lynn Nottage. Primary data comes from the play itself, focusing on examining intersectional feminism in the characters. Secondary data from various sources supported the analysis. Data analysis includes classification, interpretation, and explanation using the theory of intersectional feminism. The result of this analysis is two oppressions experienced by the two characters, namely, Sexism where Sophie is always denigrated because she is someone who is considered ―ruined‖ and is seen as having bad luck because of the things that have happened to her. And Salima always has a hard time because she works in a bar where her opinions are ignored and the pleasure of the soldiers is paramount. And then, there is Social Class, Sophie who can count and read is trusted by Mama Nadi to take care of the calculations and she will not be told like the other servants who go to draw water. For impact, the impact obtained by the two characters is that they are traumatized both psychologically and emotionally. Psychologically, Sophie and Salima always experience things that make them scared and make their bodies react when there is something they are afraid of, emotionally, Salima always cries, fears and remembers memories of our past when she was still with her happy family, while Sophie always feels that what happened to her in the past will forever haunt her and make her unable to work properly. Keywords: oppression, trauma, sexism, impact, social class
