Abstract
This research aims to describe and analyze the Fremen’s system of religion and how their belief impacts the other elements of the Fremen’s socio-cultural life, by the perspective of anthropology. The necessity of this research is propelled by the lack of researches on the aspect of religion within this novel by the time this research was conducted. The methods used are qualitative descriptive, with the main data sourced from the novel Dune itself and the secondary data ranging from research journals on the same novel to various books and articles on this topic. The technique of analyzing the data involves classification, interpretation, and explanation. Koentjaraningrat’s theory of system of religion is used for the analysis. The end result is that the religion of the Fremen fulfils the five elements of religion given by Koentjaraningrat: religious emotion, the Fremen responded to all religious emotion with an outward awe, but them facing their messiah is the most intense; religious belief, they worship Shai-Hulud as their God, they belief in the existence of spiritual realm and being, they have a prophecy of a messiah, and they have a holy scripture called Kitab al-Ibar; religious rituals that they have are prayer of Salat, Tahaddi al- Burhan, consecration of Sayyadina, Ritual of Reverend Mother, and ritual of Sand-riding; religious equipment used in their rites are Water of Life, Maker Hooks, and Thumper; religious group, the hierarchy within their religion starting from the bottom are commoner, Sayyadina, and Reverend Mother. Their religious belief affects the social organizing within their culture, namely politics and religion ones, which was separated before the coming of their messiah; when He arrives, politics and religion became one, with the messiah as the nexus. In addition to that, their system of livelihood also became affected by their religion, turning what was previously being mundane things and acts into being sacred.
