ABSTRACT Dewi Jayanti. 2019. The use of talking stick method to improve students’ speaking skill at SMA Negeri 7 Halmahera Barat. Thesis, English Education Study Program, Teacher Training and Education Faculty, Khairun University. Advisor (I) Anwar Ismail, S.Pd, M.Hum. and Advisor (II) Naniek Jusnita, S. Pd., M. Pd. The objective of this research is to know the use of talking stick method in improving students’ speaking skill at eleventh grade of SMA Negeri 7 Halmahera Barat. This research used quantitative research with pre-experimental research as it is design and one group pretest - posttest. The sampling technique used Convenient Sampling or opportunity sampling. Instrument of this research used is a test of speaking in describing picture. It was analyzed using speaking rubric. The researcher choose class XI IPA1 as the sample, consist of 27 students. Data analysis showed that there was not significant differences between pretest and posttest of students’ speaking skill using talking stick method. This is evident from the result of students score from pretest is 1.020 and posttest is 1.500. To see whether the hypothesis was accepted or rejected. The reseacher used t-test score and the result of significant level is 0.01. So t-test score is 12.60 higher than t-table 2.479 with degrees of freedom 26. It can be concluded that the use of talking stick method can improve students’ speaking skill at SMA Negeri 7 Halmahera Barat but not significant. Keywords: talking stick method, speaking skill.
