Abstract
This research is aimed to describe the students’ ability in using word formation especially derivation form. Derivation form is one of the important word formation especially for the students at English Language Education Study Program to master, so they could be able to perform a better future English teacher for their students. This research was mainly focusing on derivation form of word class transformation (Noun, Verb, Adjective, and Adverb). The design of this research is mixed method or descriptive quantitative. This research assigned 40 students of the sixth semester at English Language Education Study Program of Khairun University in academic year 2019/2020 as the subjects of this research. The data was taken from the students’ score in vocabulary test which about derivation form of word class transformation. The instrument was based on fill in the blank with 100 numbers which are divided into 10 parts with different derivation form, Relying qualitative method, the data was analyzed by using descriptive statistic, which focus on mean and rate percentage score. The research obtained several findings as follows: (1) the students’ ability in using word formation at English Language Education Study Program of Khairun University academic year 2019/2020 was very poor. supported by the students’ mean score was 19,325 indicated E or fail level; (2) Based on the result, it showed that part C (Derivation Adjective to Noun) was the most correct that students could do. However, other parts such as part A (Derivation Verb to Noun), B (Derivation Noun to Verb), D (Derivation Noun to Adjective), E (Derivation Adjective to Verb), F (Derivation Verb to Adjective), G (Derivation Adjective to Adverb), H (Derivation Noun to Noun), J (Adjective to Adjective) showed most very poor results, altough some respondents were able to obtain better result. In addition, part I (Derivation Verb to Verb) was the poorest that all respondents could not obtain a single correct numbers Keywords: word formation, derivation form, derivation suffixes, word classes transformation, ability.
