Abstract
The objective of this study is to know the extent to which the use of dictation significantly increases the students’ vocabulary at SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Tidore Kepulauan. This research used quantitative method with pre-experimental design by applying one group pretest-posttest design. Sample of this research were 23 students of eight grade at SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Tidore Kepulauan in academic year 2018/2019. The researcher have collected the data by giving pretest and posttest after the treatment. In the pretest the researcher administered essay test and also in posttest using essay test through dictation. The formula used is dependent data analysis using t-test. The research finding that teaching through dictation can significantly increase students’ vocabulary mastery. It is evident that students’ average posttest score (59.82) is higher than their average pretest score (38.52). The statistical test value (16.48) is higher than the t-table (1,717) at the significant level of 0,05 and the degree of freedom of 22. This means that the null hypothesis is rejected and the alternative hypothesis is accepted. Keywords : Quantitative research, vocabulary, dictation
