Abstract
The objectives of this research is to find out the students‟ skill in using basic tenses at the first semester students of English Language Education Study Program Khairun University of Ternate academic year 2023-2024. The population of this research was the first semester students at English Education Study Program Khairun University of Ternate in academic year 2023-2024. While, the sample of this research were 31 respondents that taken by using convenience sampling. This research applied a descriptive quantitative method. The data were collected by using 45 items of multiple choices and essay test. Researcher found that no one student are included in the excellent and very good categories. 1 student (3.23%) is included in the good category. Then there are 3 students (9.68%) who are included in the fairly good category. 2 students (6.45%) are included in the fair category. 15 students (48.39%) are included in the poor category. 10 students (32.26%) are included in the very poor category. In summary, the average student score in using basic English tenses with a total average score of 42.41. It means that the students skill in using basic tenses at first semester students still low. Keywords: quantitative descriptive method, students‟ skill, basic tenses.
