Faradila Goro-Goro. 2024. “The Use of Slang in the Fortec Youth Community of Fitu Village, Ternate City (Viewed from a Sociolinguistic Approach)” (Supervised by Farida Maricar and Fitriningsih Pratiwi Mahmud) The purpose of this study is to identify the variety of slang and analyze the factors that influence the use of slang in the Fortec youth community in Fitu Village, Ternate City. This research is a qualitative research. Primary data were collected through observation by applying observation procedures, purposive sampling technique, interviews, and documentation. Meanwhile, secondary data was obtained through literature study. The research data analysis technique uses a sociolinguistic approach and Yule‟s theory. While the descriptive data writing technique uses the model of Miles and Haberman. The results showed that the slang variations used by the Fortec youth community in Fitu Village can be identified according to the variation of sound and letter games that can be formed in the word layer through shortening, beheading, foreign language adaptation, and pure creation by utilizing the arbitrary nature of language with certain rules. In the aspect of word shortening, it is done through the removal of vowel sounds that are considered not to affect the original meaning of a word and appear in acronym patterns. In the aspect of decapitation, it is done by paying attention to spelling elements rather than pronunciation. This means that a word can be amputated if it can still be spelled even though it only consists of three letters (phonemes). Meanwhile, the foreign language adaptation aspect is found in the form of English and Arabic absorption which is modified in such a way through changing and adding vowel sounds. While the pure form of creation appears in the form of metathesis patterns, in the form of prokem and code language that can only be understood by some Fortec members. In speech, the use of slang often appears in the form of code mix. Meanwhile, the factors that influence the use of slang in the Fortec community can be viewed according to two aspects, namely aspects of the friendship environment and aspects of social media. In the friendship environment aspect, a number of new language varieties are spoken intensely in communication activities so that they gradually become synonymous with the way Fortec youth communicate. Meanwhile, the influence of social media is shown through the trajectory of meeting people with different socio-cultural backgrounds, resulting in cultural crossover. In the process of crossing and meeting, these cultures can influence each other. The use of language on social media gradually changes the way a person speaks and communicates with others.
