Abstract

Revaldi Ramdana, 2024. Social Practices in the Novel "Divergent" by Veronika Roth (Viewed from Pierre Bourdieu's Perspective) (Supervised by Nurfani and Sulmi Magfirah) This research purposes to illustrate and identify the social practices of each group, namely the Abnegation Faction, Amity Faction, Candor Faction, Erudite Faction, Dauntless Faction, and Divergent. Social practices include habitus, capital, field and the impacts of social practices, namely social contract and class competition. This research is based on Pierre Bourdiue's perspective view, especially on social practices theory. Apart from this theory, the poststructuralist approach is used as a discourse limitation as well as a link between social practice theory and the novel. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method, to explore and describe all social conditions in the novel descriptively and adjust to the researcher's understanding. The data collection technique of this research uses primary data, namely the novel "Divergent by Veronica Roth" and secondary data obtained from the internet, research papers and journals relevant to the research. The results showed that social practices consisting of habitus, capital and field are part of each group. The habitus of each group is formed based on the mindset that is manifested in the behavior of each individual of the group, then capital is a reciprocal relationship with external groups formed in a series of interactions between groups and the field itself which is a container of interaction which contains the positioning and position achieved by each group. In addition, researchers also analyze the impact of the application of social practices. The impact of social practices leads to the formation of a social contract that contains each group cooperating to exchange capital in social interactions, besides that there is also a series of class competition between groups that want to occupy themselves in a higher stratification and groups that maintain positions from movements to dominate other groups. Key Words: Divergent, Social Practices, Habitus, & Class Competition
