Thesis, English Education Study Program, Department of Language and Arts Education, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Universitas Khairun. Supervisor (I) Silvani Umar Ali, S.S., S.Pd., M.Hum and Supervisor (II) Yetty, S.S., M.Hum. This research aims to find out the types of grammatical characteristics of African American Vernacular English used in the Rush Hour movie. Using a descriptive qualitative method, this research analyzed primary data from the Rush Hour movie and secondary data source. The data collecting techniques included collecting all of AAVE’s grammatical characteristics in the Rush Hour movie from the script and match it to the film, identifying the script in the form of dialogue and classifying all AAVE’s grammatical characteristics. The data analysis techniques included data reduction, finding grammatical differences, displaying the data in table form, and withdrawal conclusion. The result of the research showed that there are four types of grammatical characteristics of African American Vernacular English that used by the main character Carter in the Rush Hour movie. Those are verb phrase, negation, nominal, and question formation. However, in this research, the researcher found there are seven features of types of AAVE’s grammatical characteristics in 84 utterances. Those are verb phrase in two features such as, the copula or auxiliary absence in 13 utterances and the use of gonna in 22 utterances, negation in three features such as, the use of ain’t in 28 utterances, negative concord in seven utterances, and negative inversion in two utterances, nominal in a feature the use of y’all in 10 utterances, and question formation in a feature non-inverted wh- question in 2 utterances produced by the main character Carter. In this movie, the main character James Carter are using AAVE to everyone, not just to other African-American.
