Abstract
This research uses Roland Barthes’ theory. The aim of this research is to describe denotative meaning and connotative meaning in semiotic studies. This research uses a qualitative approach with descriptive methods. In this research, the memes most frequently used were funny memes in the form of comparison memes. Semiotic meaning that can be analyzed from this research can be found in various aspects such as expression, captions or sentences, objects or even changes in facial expression that can be shown by someone in a meme. Based on the research result found, the researcher concluded that in a meme there is semiotic meaning, denotative meaning and connotative meaning. So, in the 9gag memes used there are 10 meme images which contain 10 denotative meanings and 10 connotative meanings. Keywords : meme, denotative, connotative
