Abstract

This research aims to analyze and understand how Taylor Swift conveys gender issues through the lyrics in her songs using the existentialist feminism approach. The objectives of this research include gender issues and criticism of the conventional role of women in the modern era by the songwriter in the three songs. This research uses descriptive qualitative method to analyze gender issues in Taylor Swift's songs The Man, Mad Woman and The Last Great American Dynasty. The main data used in this research are the three songs by focusing on gender issues raised. Supporting data are taken from various sources. Data analysis includes classification and explanation based on the theory of existentialist feminism. The research data found are gender issues and criticism of the conventional role of women in the modern era. The gender issues found in the songs The Man, Mad Woman and The Last Great American Dynasty are gender stereotypes, gender double standards and gender roles. These three issues are negatively directed towards women in the world of work, the expression of emotions by women and women's lifestyles that are not in accordance with the norm. The conventional roles of women that are criticized in Taylor Swift's three songs are to be religious, chaste, submissive, and to take care of the household. However existentialist feminism is here to emphasize that women have the freedom to do what they want, and to express themselves without being bound by social expectations. Keywords: gender stereotypes, double standard gender, woman role
