Abstract

This research aims to identify the structural elements contains in the novel. In addition, the other objective in it is to describe the hero characters. The novel “City of Ember” features themes such as adventure, friendship, as well as underground life. This research uses descriptive analysis method. While the approach used is Cawelti adventure formula. The data analysis technique is based on reading comprehension. The data collection technique in this study is based on primary data sources including theses, articles, and journals which are related to this research. Based on the research, the researcher focuses on three structural elements from the first sub-problem, they are characters who appear in the novel, Plot and Setting. While the researcher finds three points from the second sub-problem, including: Lina and Doon, the hero and heroin characters, who experience problems and overcome obstacle, Suffer from danger when they want to escape from undergound city and get the the triumph when they find the new world which is not in underground.
