ABSTRACT Munir, Astuti: Researching students of the English Language Education Faculty of Teacher Training and Education at Khairun Ternate University. Especially for the sixth semester students to write one type of exposition text. Essay. English Language Education Study Program, Teacher Training and Education Faculty, Khairun Ternate University. Advisor: (1) Anwar Ismail S.Pd, M.Hum, (2) Asrul M. Syawal S.Pd, M.Pd. The purpose of this study was to determine the ability to improve student cohesion and coherence in writing one type of exposition text. The researcher focused on analyzing student competence in the use of cohesion and coherence. This research is descriptive qualitative. The subject of this study consisted of 37 students in the sixth semester of the English Language, Faculty and Teacher Training Study Program, Khairun Ternate University. This study uses a paper that will be given to students to be asked to write a discourse on "The Effects of Waste on the Environment". So the results of their writing prove their competence to build cohesion and coherence. Cohesion achieved by students with good quality. Where the students can build grammatical cohesions which consist of reference as much as 35%, subsitutions 6%, ellipsis 7%, and conjuction 17%. While lexical cohesion which consist of reiteration as much as 33% and collocation is 2%. While their coherence is also good. Where students build coherence as much as 14% at Extensive Scale, 34% at Moderate Scale, 22% at Complete Scale, 22% at Limited Scale, and 8% at Zero scale.
