Abstract

The research aims to know the students' strategies in listening comprehension. The research applied qualitative research method. This research involved 17 respondents of third Semester students of English Study Program at Khairun University. The data was collected using a questionnaire adapted from Vandergrift the comprehension strategies of second language questionnaire. For the strategies used by students are metacognitive and cognitive with nine indicators and 23 cognitive indicators. The results show a metacognitive strategy with 14 high positive respondents using the category "refocus and comprehension monitoring” and three low negative respondents use, meanwhile cognitive strategies with a number of 15 highly positive respondents using the "transfer" category and three low negative respondents using. Based on these two strategies, it can be concluded that the results show that cognitive strategies are more dominant than metacognitive strategies.
