Abstract

The objective of this research is the to know to the extent to which the use of inductive approach is significant effective in teaching English especially simple present tense. The research applied quantitative research with pre-experiment design. The population in this research is the students of SMP Negeri 5 Kota Ternate, and the samples of the research are 30 students of Class VIII-1. The researcher gave the pretest before the treatment about simple present tense and then gave the treatment and then gave the posttest concerning simple present tense. The posttest shows that from 30 students, six students obtained good, and 24 students obtained fair score. It means that the score in posttest is higher than pretest. The result of pretest is 1,690. Based on the data above, students’ understanding of simple present tense is still low before learning through Inductive approach, and the result of posttest is 2,245. The posttest score is higher than pretest score. The value of t-test is 20.13 and t-table is 1.699. t-test result is higher than t-table at the significant level of pretest and posttest. It means that there was significant difference between pretest and posttest, the result of pretest is 56.3 and posttest is 74.8, it means that H0 is rejected and H1 accepted.
