Abstract
The objective of this research is to identify and categorize the various defense mechanisms exhibited by the character Pollyanna in Eleanor H. Porter's novel "Pollyanna," and to analyze how Pollyanna’s use of self defense mechanisms influence the people around her. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method to deeply understand Self Defense Mechanisms by gathering qualitative data. The study uses two types of data: primary data from Eleanor H. Porter’s novel "Pollyanna," focusing on selfdefense mechanisms, and secondary data from relevant studies, publications, and journals. Data collection involves comprehensive reading comprehension of the novel and internet sources to gather expert opinions. Data analysis includes classification of self-defense mechanisms, interpretation to understand the issues, and explanation to present findings through various forms like texts, quotations, and messages. The researcher finds that Pollyanna exhibits several self-defense mechanisms: Suppression, Refusal, Justification, Inversion, Separation, Redirection, and Channeling. Pollyanna suppresses negative thoughts, justifies questionable behavior with logical reasons, behaves oppositely to her negative feelings (Inversion), separates her thoughts and feelings, redirects frustration to less threatening targets, and channels negative energy into positive actions. Pollyanna's defense mechanisms influence three characters in the novel: Nancy the maid, Mrs. Snow the town resident, and her aunt, Miss Polly Harrington. Nancy, initially resentful of Aunt Polly, changes her attitude after learning Pollyanna's Glad Game. Mrs. Snow, once needy and ungrateful, becomes more positive after interacting with Pollyanna. Miss Polly, initially stern, becomes sweet and caring after spending time with her niece. Keywords: self-defense mechanisms, suppression, refusal, justification, inversion, separation, redirection, channeling, influence, glad game
