Abstract

This research focuses on code switching among adolescents in South Morotai. this study aims to the use of code switching among adolescents in South Morotai and factors that influence code switching among adolescents in South Morotai. The method used in this research is the Qualitative Descriptive Method with a sociolinguistic approach. and not only uses primary data in research, but researcher also use secondary data as a form of supporting data to strengthen the results of this study. Data collection techniques in this research are observation, interviews, listening techniques involving speaking, listening techniques without being involved in conversation, and documentation. The result of the research shows that adolescents in South Morotai use Galela and Ternate Malay. Data from speech events in various domains in this study shows that the code in the form of language in the domain used in communication among adolescents is in South Morotai in speaking. Galela language and Ternate Malay language are used depending on the context and who is the participant. In situations at home and in traditional situations, adolescents mostly use the Galela language; meanwhile, in school situations, Ternate Malay and Indonesian are used when students talk about things related to science, such as discussing in class. Apart from that, the use of the Galela language is found when discussing things that are relaxed and related to everyday life, and in market situations, adolescents use the Ternate Malay language and the Gelela language, which can be used interchangeably depending on who the participant is. Factors that cause adolescents to become bilingual teenagers are intermarriage, migration, code-switching, and code-mixing. So the choice of code depends on the speaker's interlocutors, place, and situation in the interaction. Keywords: bilingualism, sociolinguistics, language choice, code switching.
