Abstract
The purpose of this study is to identify the implementation of politeness strategies in the context of English learning in class VIII of SMPN 4 North Halmahera and to analyze the factors that influence the implementation of politeness in English learning activities in class VIII of SMPN 4 North Halmahera. This research is a qualitative research. Primary data collection techniques were conducted through observation, interview and documentation. While secondary data is done through literature study. The data analysis technique of this research applies the concept of Leech (2014) regarding politeness strategy according to the maxims principle. The results of the analysis shows that the politeness strategy of students‟ speech acts in English learning activities in class VIII can be seen in three forms of maxims, namely modesty maxim, generosity maxim, and opinion-reticence maxim. In the type of modesty maxim, the politeness of speech acts is shown through the use of permissive, assertive speech in repetitive form combined through code-mixing to provide complete information, the use of plural pronominal to involve speech partners in an equality, and expressive speech in terms of apologies. The generosity maxim is shown through the use of appreciative, directive, and commissive speech. Meanwhile, the opinion-reticence maxim is shown through the refinement of the opinions conveyed by each speaker. This can be seen through the use of hedge expressive sentences and adverb frequence. The factors that influence the implementation of politeness in English learning activities in class VIII can be seen in two aspects, namely the condition of the social environment where the similarity of social and cultural backgrounds causes students to communicate intensely without questioning the normative boundaries of politeness values as generally accepted. In addition, there are also factors of status differences between teachers and students that cause gaps. The gap can be identified through the way students‟ diction and language style are adjusted to the normative state of the status, resulting in the interaction between teachers and students feeling rigid.
