Abstract

This study uses a play “The Octoroon” by Dion Boucicault as the object of the study. This study aims to analyzing the intrinsic elements of the play itself as well as to describes the author’s worldview towards anti�slavery using a genetic structuralism approach by Lucien Goldmann. The method of this study uses a qualitative descriptive analysis which means this research analyzed by the researcher based on the social facts or the phenomenon happened around the author when the literary work was produced. Then the researcher analyzing the primary data is a play “The Octoroon” and supporting the analysis of this research, the researcher uses the secondary data such as books, script, journals, and articles as well which is to observe and understand the problems that relating to the topic of this study. There were two results of this study. First, this study analyzes the intrinsic elements of the play consist of character and characterization, plot, setting and theme of the play. Second, this study pointed out the author’s worldview towards anti-slavery in the play within the dialogue in each of the characters which is consist of religious conviction, sympathetic affections, and bolt of freedom as depicted through the dialogues of the characters which raises the religious and moral attitudes of the society towards the racial issue to gain freedom and equalities of rights in blacks to opposes the system of slavery in America in 18th century.
