Abstract

The aims of this study are (1) To describe the patterns of language shift used by teenagers in Kao Village and toelaborate factors that cause Kao language shift teenagers in Kao Village This type of research uses qualitative descriptive methods, to explain,elaborate, analysis and describe data from observations and interviews as well as documentation by Kao Village teenagers. Based on a sociolinguistic approach, namely studying language and its relationship with society. The respondents in this research were Kao Village teenagers who lived in Kao Village, Kao District, North Halmahera Regency. At the data collection stage, the researcher used the listening/interview method, observing local teenagers and listening to recordings. The data that has been collected, then analysis and presented in the form of an explanation. The results of this research show that there has been a shift in the Kao language among teenagers. Therefore are two problems that occur. (1) The patterns of language shift is that at the vocabulary level it is dominate by standard Ternate vocabulary. This gave rise to a second language from the previous Kao language. and (2) Factors shifting Kao language by teenagers. Several factors that influence the shift in Kao language among teenagers are internal factors and external factors. Internal factors, self factor and Everyday factors of language at home. external factors: mass media, education, environment, bilingualism and immigration Keywords: Language Shift As to Ternate Malay by teenagers from Kao Village
