Abstract

The aim of this research is to determine students' difficulties in translating metaphors in Coldplay songs in the sixth semester of the English Language Education Study Program at Khairun University. The data collection technique used in this research uses two instruments, namely tests and interviews with students. This study used descriptive qualitative method. The results of the research show that students' difficulties in translating the meaning of metaphors are because unfamiliar metaphorical images, students rarely found metaphorical vocabulary in general texts, they said that translating metaphors looked at the overall context and not to translate literally to be able to interpret unfamiliar metaphorical images. In addition, another difficulty lies in the vagueness of the metaphorical topic which makes it difficult for the participants to interpret and keep translating literally because they cannot capture the meaning of the metaphorical topic in the Coldplay song lyrics.
