Abstract

Rahmawati Kharie, 2024. The Industrial Revolution in England as Seen in The Novel “Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen” (Supervised by Dahrun Sarif and Sulmi Magfirah). This research aims to find out the impact of the industrial revolution on the social class in England and the second to analyze the kinds of social class in England reflected in the novel Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen. The novel is 325 pages long and was published in 1817. This research uses qualitative descriptive method, sociological approach and Marxism theory about social class from Karl Marx. The data collection technique starts from reading the analyzed material, recording and classifying the data that are included in the kinds of social class and the impact of the industrial revolution in England. Based on the results of the research, researcher found two results, 1.) Kinds of social class, which consist of upper class and lower class. the upper class is a person who has wealth and honor, the upper class has two parts, namely violence and honor. then, the lower class is a person who does not have wealth and social status is in the lower class. the lower class has two parts, namely social environment and social status. 2.) The impact of the industrial revolution in England, which consists of migration to cities and change. migration to cities is the emergence of new crowds in cities so that some characters migrate to cities to try new things. social change is the emergence of a new class in society, which is all obtained from changes in educational and occupational status, no longer from family inheritance. from the results of the analysis above, the researcher gets the types of social classes and the impact of the industrial revolution reflected in the novel Northanger Abbey which is described directly by the author. the researcher gets the kinds of social class and the impact of the industrial revolution reflected in the novel Northanger Abbey which is described directly by the author.
