Abstract
H. CHASAN BOESOIRIE REGIONAL GENERAL HOSPITAL, TERNATE Muliani Laher, Ismail Rahman, Muhammad Subhan A. Sibadu, Department of Pharmacy, Faculty of Medicine, Khairun University ABSTRACT Introduction: Infection is a major health concern globally, including in Indonesia. A common culprit of these infections is E. coli bacteria, which can lead to a range of illnesses. While antibiotics are commonly used to treat E. coli infections, their prolonged use can lead to antibiotic resistance. To address this issue, there is growing interest in developing antimicrobial drugs from natural sources, such as cloves, which possess inherent antimicrobial properties. Aim: To evaluate the antibacterial activity of clove flower extract (Eugenia aromatica) against E. coli bacteria isolated from clinical samples at Dr. H. Chasan Boesoirie Ternate Regional Hospital. Methods: The method employed was the well diffusion assay, using clove flower extract concentrations of 10%, 20%, 40%, 60%, and 80%. The positive control was amoxicillin, while the negative control was sterile water. Result: Among the five concentrations of clove flower extract tested, the ethanol extract of Eugenia aromatica demonstrated antibacterial activity, as indicated by the formation of inhibition zones. The 80% extract concentration was the most effective, with an average inhibition zone of 18.63 mm, classified as strong inhibition against E. coli. Conclusion: Ethanol extract of clove flowers (Eugenia aromatica) has an antibacterial effect on the growth of E. coli, the higher the concentration of the extract, the larger the inhibition zone formed.
