Abstract
The purpose of this study is to find out what causes the difficulties by students of class A semester 3 of the khairun university English Education study program when speaking English and the factors that cause students to have difficulty speaking English. the subjects of this study were 36 students of class A semester 3. This study uses qualitative research methods, data collection techniques carried out in the form of questionnaires and interviews. The questionnaire used was adopted from Gustina with six factors of difficulty discussed, namely linguistic obstacles, speech processing, academic and conversational English skills, negative effects, access to speaking opportunities, and fluency. The results found in this study cause students difficulty speaking English due to lack of vocabulary mastery, low understanding of grammar, lack of confidence and lack of motivation, the most dominant factor that causes students difficulty speaking English is the linguistic obstacle factor.
