Abstract
This research focuses on reading comprehension problems that are often faced by students at SMPN 3 Ternate and the strategies used in solving reading comprehension problems. Related to this, researcher used a case study approach to determine students' reading comprehension problems. This research aims to (1) identify types of reading comprehension problems are faced by students at SMPN 3 Ternate. (2) to find the strategies are applied by the students to solved their reading comprehension problems. . This study used descriptive qualitative method. The data collection techniques used were observation, interviews and documentation. The data analysis techniques used are data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results of the research show that the problems often faced by class VII students at SMPN 3 Ternate in reading comprehension include low vocabulary mastery, lack of understanding of learning material, difficulty understanding English, boring teacher teaching methods, and low interest. reading. Strategies that can be used to overcome reading comprehension problems include teachers having to provide information to students first, for example holding discussions, lectures, or providing textbooks at the first meeting and providing material using media that attracts students' attention, for example using a displayed power point. through in focus screens and game media to test vocabulary mastery.
