Abstract

This research aims to know how social conflict develops in the novel and the factors that contributed to social conflict in the novel Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte. First, The researcher describes how social conflict develop in the novel Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte and factors that contributed to the social conflict. Started by the rejection Heathcliff receives from the Earnshaw in the forms of hostility and physical violence. And also class division and revenge as a factors that contribute. The method used in this research is qualitative method and descriptive analysis method. This method is used to accurately describe the objects and subjects studied. Reading comprehension, library research, and internet browsing are the techniques use in this research. And for data analysis techniques, the researcher use classification, interpretation, and conclusion. Researcher also include data sources with primary data. The approach use is Sociology of literature approach to make it clear and to give a reflection of society at that time. The results of this research shows there are one way the conflict develop within the novel. Which is, the rejection Heathcliff receives from the Earnshaw in the forms of hostility, where he is rejected of his presence and denied to enter the room the Earnshaw household. And physical violence, highlight the physical abuse Heathcliff receive from Hindley Earnshaw, such as throwing an object, forced labor, and flogging. On the other side, there are two factors contribute to social conflict. They are, class division, Class division shows the different of social status of Heathcliff who is lower class being mistreated by those above him. And revenge, revenge shows the determination of Heathcliff to avenge those who have wronged him during his time in Wuthering Heights.
