Abstract
Music can accompany daily activities and make the listener lulled by the lyrics. However, there are many listeners do not understand the meaning of the lyrics conveyed by the singer. This study aims to analyze the type and meaning of figurative language in eight of Keenan Te’s songs. The qualitative descriptive method is used in this research. To gather the data the researcher used some methods, namely: browsing, collecting, typing, printing, reading and noting. After getting the data the researcher analyzes with uses three steps, there are identification, classification and interpretation. This research uses Leech's (1969) theory to examine the type of figurative language and Leech's (1981) theory to examine its meaning. The result of this research shows that there are eight types of figurative language in eight of Keenan Te’s songs, namely: personification (4 data), pleonasm (2 data), rhetorical question (5 data), hyperbole (20 data), simile (2 data), metaphor (3 data), metonymy (2 data) and litotes (2 data). In addition, the author found 3 types of meaning, namely: conceptual meaning (11 data), connotative meaning (25 data) and affective meaning (15 data).
