Abstract

Hidden Figures is a true story movie that tells the story of racism in Virginia, United States in 1961. This film tells the true story of the history of three black women who succeeded in realizing NASA's dream in a series of projects to launch the first American spacecraft. This movie tells how the separation carried out by the American government against whites and blacks is so strict in the form of limited rights obtained by blacks, public facilities and minimal employment. This research aims to identify racism symbols and describe how the meaning of racist symbols in the Hidden Figures movie in Roland Barthes' perspective. In this study, researchers used a qualitative descriptive method with Roland Barthes' semiotic approach. Barthes developed semiotic into two levels of signification, namely denotation and connotation which produce explicit meaning to understand the meaning of racism in the film. The results found are about nine data of signifier and signified symbols that appear reflected in racism and then analysis what meaning is contained in the data. From the data, researchers describe the meaning of denotation, connotation and myth in the Hidden Figures movie. From the statement of the problems, it can be seen that the Hidden Figures filmmaker shows several symbols of racism through several scenes, shooting methods, conversations or dialog between players.
