Abstract

Romance is a popular fiction genre that tells the story of love between two characters (generally heterosexual), who experience problems in their relationship, but can be resolved, and the story ends happily. The formula is conventional and permanent. This research was conducted with the aim of verifying the romance formula contained in the novel "The Ice Princess” by Elizabeth Hoyt. The method used is descriptive qualitative, with the concept of romace formula by John G. Cawelti. Data in the form of phrases and sentences were collected from the novel using library study techniques and studied on a relevant theoretical basis. The theory of romance formulas was adapted from Cawelti's ideas which contain archetypes of romance formulas and the plot of romance formulas that form the story in the novel under study. The research results show that overall, the constructive elements of narrative text, namely the characters and storyline in the novel The Ice Princess, meet the criteria of Pamela's formula. The plot is progressive, filling all twelve chapters. In the formation of this story there are two characters who in the perspective of the formula are called romanceHero (male character) as wellHeroine (female character) which is then wrapped in a storyline which in the romance formula is divided intoThe hero figure is depicted as a good and loyal figure, Heroin is depicted as an erotic and vulgar figure, the relationship between Hero and Heroin, Expressions of love, There is a touch of affection, There are obstacles, The story has a happy ending.
