Abstract

The research focuses on factors causing students’ speaking anxiety at the fifth semester of English Language Education Study Program of Khairun University. the objective of the research is to know the factors causing students’ speaking anxiety. This research uses Qualitative method, to describing phenomena related to the problem of the research. The subjects in this research are the fifth semester of English Language Education Study Program of Khairun University, consist of 25 students. There are some inhibiting factors to speak English faced by students. The factor that makes them feel anxious in speaking is because they have low proficiency in vocabulary, grammar and skill of speaking. Some students stated that vocabulary is the first problem which hamper them to speak english. That causes hampering students to speak English inside and outside of campus are lack of vocabulary. It can influence the students’ using English speaking area application in the campus because of having lack of vocabulary. So they do not feel self confident to speak English outside or inside the classroom. The other factors are afraid and laziness. The factor that makes them feel anxious in speaking is because they have no support to apply English speaking area At campus. Based on the experience of the two HMJ election, the candidate of English students Association president always express the plan to coperate with the lecture to apply English speaking area. But the low respons from the lecture made students dissapointed because the lecture offen speak Indonesia to them. Key words: exploring factors causing, speaking, anxiety.
