Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine students' competence in writing summaries in English texts. This study used descriptive quantitative method, the subjects of this study were 20 students of class A third semester, English education study program of Khairun University, based on the results of analysis, average score of the results of analyzing topic sentence 62.5%, summary and details 58.75%, concluding sentence 53.75%, and convention 38.75%. It is also seen from the average score of each student 51.125. No students who get very good grades or students score less than 80-100. One student got a good score because his score 70-84, nine students got a fair score 50-69, and eleven students got a poor score 50. Overall the competence of third semester class A students in writing summaries is mainly poor, and a small proportion of their score is high.. Keywords: Summarizing, Writing, Competence.
