Abstract

The purpose of this study is to identify the errors in the use of simple past tense in the writing of students of class A semester 2 of English education study program of Khairun University. The subjects of this study were 27 students of Class A. The data collection techniques used in this study were written tests and interviews. The researcher used Dulay's Theory to classify the types of errors. In this study, the researcher found 3 types of errors. Those are omission, addition, and misformation. The percentage of error frequency. They are ommison type (2,5%), addition type (0,75%), and misformation type (67,5%). Of all the types, the most frequent error type is misformation. Judging from the results of the interview, the causes of simple past tense errors that most often occur are students' lack of understanding of grammar, simple past tense formulas and lack of vocabulary so that they have difficulty in making sentences, besides that they lack understanding of the placement of past tense verbs in making sentences. The cause of these errors also arises because they do not maximize the time to study, they only rely on learning time on campus, when they go home they study only because of making assignments from the campus. Keywords: Errors, Past tense
