Abstract
FIRLIA M. PANE, 2024. Thesis title: connotative meaning in Emily Dickinson’s selected poems. Supervised by Dr. Suddin MS Djumadil, S.S., M.Hum and Nurhadi Hamka, S.S., M.Gen & Appling. English literature study program, faculty of cultural science, Universitas Khairun. This study analyzes the connotative forms and connotative meanings present in four poems by Emily Dickinson. Connotative meaning, by its very nature, cannot be interpreted directly or literally, as it includes additional layers of meaning that enrich the text. The main objective of this study is to uncover and analyze the various connotative forms and connotative meanings contained in Emily Dickinson's works, using the theoretical framework proposed by linguists Leech and Chaer. This research utilizes qualitative and descriptive research methodology. The purpose of this study identifies several forms of connotation, including emotional connotation, which evokes feelings; personal connotation, which reflects individual experiences; cultural connotation, which is related to societal norms and values; and social connotation, which relates to interpersonal dynamics. In addition, this study categorizes connotative meanings into three different types: a total of 11 positive connotative meanings, 15 negative connotative meanings, and 4 neutral connotative meanings. Keywords: poetry, forms, and connotative meaning
