Abstract

Intan Kusumawati Haulussy. 06212011056. Psychiatric Oppressive System on The Patients In The Novel ‘One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest’ By Ken Kesey. Used literary psychological approach. English Department. Faculty of Cultural Sciences. University of Khairun Ternate 2024. Under the graduance of Drs. Fachmi Alhadar, M.Hum and Dahrun Sarif, S.S., M.A. This research focuses on the psychological effects experienced by patients under the authority of Nurse Ratched and the oppressive environment of a mental hospital, as depicted in the novel "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest." The research examines what Nurse Ratched and hospital staff do that makes patients conform and even rebel in the novel. The researcher employed a qualitative-descriptive analysis method. Data were collected from the primary reference, the novel itself, by taking relevant quotes such as dialogues or narratives related to the topic. The researcher also utilized a literary psychological approach, as this approach is relevant and helps to elaborate the topic of the research as a whole. From the results of this research show that social environments, such as authoritarian and oppressive environments like mental hospitals, can have a significant impact on an individual's personality. The patients who have individual autonomy and self-esteem before are now compelled to conform due to their fear of strict rules and potential punishments by nurse Ratched. The authority of Nurse Ratched and the hospital's institutional power makes the patients feels anxiety and a sense of helplessness. Keywords: Nurse Ratched, mental hospital, oppressive, authority
