Abstract

Surinda Ode Ruslan, 2024. Symbolism in a play “Gem of the Ocean” by August Wilson. Viewed From Roland Barthes’ Semiology Perspective. Suppervised by Bakhtiar Majid and Rudi S.Tawari. This research focuses on the symbols of African-American history and culture in the play Gem of the Ocean, to find out in depth about the symbols in this play. This research uses descriptive-qualitative analysis method. Data was collected from the main reference, namely the play Gem of the Ocean by August Wilson by taking quotations in the form of dialog or narration that are relevant to the topic raised. The researcher also used Roland Barthes' semiological perspective to look at symbols as first-order meanings and second-order meanings as myths that have deep meanings related to African culture and history. From the results of this study, researchers found symbols that have deep meanings for African people about history, culture, spirituality, oppression and also inherited trauma. Like the paper ship in the first level meaning is just an ordinary paper ship. And in the second level meaning as myth refers to the history of the long journey of African slaves who used ships to cross the Atlantic Ocean. And also the spiritual journey of the people in purifying the soul brought to Bone City which symbolizes the place of the fallen African ancestors.
