Abstract

Phenfi Jennifer. 2024. (Analysis of the Main Character in the Novel “Atomenent by Ian McEwan” Seen from the Structuralism Approach), (Supervised by Nurain Jalaluddin and Dahrun Sarif). This research aims to discuss the characters in the novel Atonement by McEwan through the Structuralism approach. This research focuses on the characters of Briony, Cecilia, Robby and also the conflict of false accusations in the novel. This research uses Descriptive Qualitative method to examine the problems in this analysis. This research also uses Robert Stanton's theory of structuralism to identify and analyse how manipulative and imaginative the three main characters are and the conflict of false accusations in the novel Atonement by McEwan. Based on the analysis, the researcher obtained the research results of two questions, 1) How are the main characters portrayed in the novel Atonement by McEwan, the researcher found that there are manipulative traits in the three main characters, namely This quote illustrates Briony's imaginative and personality, but also provides a deeper understanding of the motives and behaviour of the characters in the novel „Atonement‟, the character of Cecilia, focuses on her striking physical beauty. Let us discuss in more detail how this description illustrates the imaginative nature. 2) The conflict of false accusations in the novel, Foucault states that the dominant ideology in society affects the way we understand and judge accusations. False accusations are often influenced by certain ideologies that favour the interests of certain parties. Thus, false accusations are not just a matter of untruth, but are also the result of ideologies that shape our perspectives and judgements.
